Giggles

The best part of this long day? Bedtime giggles! This page from Charlotte's Web tickled Ben's funny bone a LOT tonight, and Kaela and I laughed pretty hard, too. One of those contagious laughter moments that makes life fun. Maybe we're just loopy at the end of the day? I still love the word pictures, no matter how old I get, though. Apparently my children do too....

"The next day was rainy and dark. Rain fell on the roof of the barn and dripped steadily from the eaves. Rain fell in the barnyard and ran in crooked courses down into the lane where thistles and pigweed grew. Rain spattered against Mrs. Zuckerman's kitchen windows and came gushing out the downspouts. Rain fell on the backs of the sheep as they grazed in the meadow. When the sheep tired of standing in the rain, they walked slowly up the lane and into the fold.

Rain upset Wilbur's plans. He had planned to go out, this day, and dig a new hole in the yard. He had other plans, too. His plans for the day went something like this:

Breakfast at 6:30. Skim milk, crusts, middlings, doughnut bits, wheat cakes with drops of maple syrup sticking to them, potato skins, leftover custard pudding with raisins, and bits of Shredded Wheat.

Breakfast would be finished at 7.

From 7 to 8, Wilbur planned to have a talk with Templeton, the rat that lived under his trough. (Kaela: Are you serious? An hour talk with a RAT?) Talking with Templeton wasn't the most interesting thing, but it was better than nothing.

From 8-9, Wilbur planned to take a nap outdoors in the sun.

From 9 to 11, he planned to dig a hole, or possibly a trench, and look for good things to eat.

From 11 to 12, he planned to stand very still and watch flies on the boards, watch bees in the clover, and watch swallows in the air. (Giggles become irrepressible at this point. Ben starts gasping with laughter.)

Twelve o'clock: lunchtime. Middlings, warm water, apple parings, carrot scrapings, meat gravy, stale hominy.....

Lunch would be over at one.

From 1 to 2, Wilbur planned to sleep.

From 2 to 3, he planned to scratch his itchy places by rubbing against the fence. (Ben is howling with laughter by now. 'Scratch his itchy places? For such a LONG time??' heeheehee)

From 3 to 4, he planned to stand perfectly still and think about what it was like to be alive....." (Kaela: What in the world? How many thoughts can you have about being alive? Giggling. This is so silly, Mommy!")

We decided it's so funny because we can relate. All those wonderful plans, laid to waste because of a little rain. Poor Wilbur. We are predicting that he will make a new friend to ease some of his loneliness very soon....
Loving this book. Again.
