Quotes from the Classroom (this week's edition)

Me: Friends, for the rest of the year, you are going to work harder than you thought possible. You may not like me. But the nicest thing I can do for you is to get you ready for middle school. I hope you remember that. We have to get your writing "up to snuff." That means no more sentence fragments. You can do this.

Small Friend: Um, can we have a party if we work hard?

His Friend: And, uh, Mrs. P? I didn't think kids should use snuff.

During a poetry open response:

Student 1 (calling out): Mrs. P? When we finish this, will you read about Jamestown again? More about the starving time?

Me: You have an open response in front of you, and there is no talking. You need to come sit here (at my desk) by yourself. Next time I will have to take your test.
(I put on quiet music CD to focus kids)

Student 2 (to himself, but loudly): Oboe!......Violin!......Piano! Listen to that piano!

His Friend: This isn't a music open response, it's poetry! Be quiet!

Student 2 (injured): But I don't know the answer to the poetry part!

Cutie I've taught most of his life: Mrs. P? I know your dad died when you were our age, but there are things about you that you haven't told us. Like your wedding night. Will you tell us the story of your wedding night?

Me: Um...how about I bring in my wedding album instead?

Another cutie: Mrs. P? When we leave here next year, will you miss us as much as you miss our friends from last year?

Me (honestly): More than you know, Buddy. More than you know.
