You'd Better Watch Out...You'd Better Not Cry....

I had to call the Big Man today. First time in 8 years teaching that I've actually had to use my Totally Top Secret, A-1 Bonafide, Direct Line to Santa's Own Red Cell Phone that is only to be used in the most EXTREME emergency situations (even though we all know how busy he is right now!)

The kids didn't believe I'd actually call. (The ones who believe, that is.)
Horrified gasps hung in the air, as I punched in the carefully concealed numbers.

Eric didn't miss a beat.

Me: Hello? Santa?

S.C.: Ahem, um, yes, how may I help you? You realize how busy I am in the workshop, right?

Me: Yes, Sir, I know, but I really need your help. I have a bit of a situation with one of my favorite little helpers here. It seems that he doesn't want to work anymore. In fact, he's suddenly very sleepy, and it's math test time.

S.C.: Ah, well...you'd better put him on, then. I don't want my elves working overtime to make toys for someone who may not need any...

So here's where I got really tickled. I could only hear my friend's side of the conversation, but I guess Mr. Claus was really very persuasive:

Little friend: Yes, sir...... I know I need to try my best........ I'm sorry, sir......... I know you're busy........ Yes, I will always do my best because that's the right thing to do....... Thank you for talking with me, sir.

He hung up the phone, answered questions from other kids about what Santa's voice was like, took the math test, and had a fabulous day. At the end of the day, he whispered in my ear, "I know you got me on that Santa thing."
Wonder of wonders, though--it worked!

I would have loved to see the look on Eric's face...

That's awesome!! I bet you won't have any more problems until school starts up again in January! Do you think you could use that trick in January? You never know, it might work. :)

A friend told me about this book called "Elf on a Shelf" or something like that. You read it to the kids, and it's about how Santa has little silent elves all over watching...then it comes with a little elf that you put up in a corner somewhere, and move it each day so they think the elf is there to see them! :) I'm looking into it...maybe I could use that until spring break or so....
Is that mean? hee hee!
