A Night in the Life

Open House was last night, after professional development all day. This morning was opening day, and we had a huge, long faculty meeting followed by more preparation. Surprise new students enrolled after Open House, schedules are shot and must be reworked, regular ed. wants lunch later....ugh.

After work, I hurried home, saw Eric for the amount of time it took him to tell me who ate what for lunch and who needs vegetables for dinner, saw him off to work, then took both kids out school supply shopping. Which may have been almost as much fun as shoving bamboo chutes up my fingernails, but not quite.

WHY do my children fight in stores?? It's as if they can sense that I am just inches away from leaving one of them there, and they have bets on which one it will be!

So then discipline, which was even more fun than the chutes would have been, dinner with a friend where we pretend to be perky and have it together (all the while, I'm sure the twitch in my neck and forehead gave out contradictory information), and then bath time, followed by water games on the bathroom floor in the tidal wave that accidentally fell out of the bathtub.

Tooth brushing, hair brushing, story reading, prayers that somehow these dear ones will grow up and be decent people who love the Lord and mirror serenity despite the fact that I'm their mother....

Kissing them goodnight, packing the backpacks, finding outfits and accessories for tomorrow, fixing lunches...

...and I just peeked in on them and found Ben snuggled up to Kaela asleep, and her with a flashlight under the covers stealing a few fleeting moments with a chapter book before the real world begins tomorrow in earnest...(where does she get that?)

...and in that crazy, unexpected moment of ordinary, it occurred to me again that I love them so much that it takes my breath away.
