Scary Score!

Attention all reading teachers! These look like grotesque Halloween props, right? A few years ago, I went to a reading conference, and there was a session how how to use some of these silly props to enhance reading instruction. These little guys were highlighted, and they're fantastic! The teacher can model tracking during guided reading instruction, then you can allow the kids use one of them to track while they read. It's more fun than just having them "follow along with their finger," and they never resist using them--even the olders! I have students with dyslexia every year, and these help them with directionality and focus as they're learning to decode.

The best part is, they're available all over the place right now! I bought some at the reading conference for $1 each that glow in the dark, but since then I've learned that we're seldom going to be enjoying a reading lesson in the dark. (duh)
So the other day I bought 7 packs of 10 each for $0.99/pack at Factory Card Outlet. I gave packs to the teachers on my team, and the rest should last me the rest of my teaching career. Score!

Just a fun little (finger) tip to jazz up your reading lessons...

Now those are a teacher supply I never would have imagined in my wildest dreams. Too funny! Do they end up in kids' noses? :)
