Things I'm Excited About Right Now

1. The week that wouldn't end is about to! One more day!

2. Kaela is having a neighborhood slumber party tomorrow night for her birthday. Which didn't seem very exciting until our good friends Matt and Sarah from church decided to chaperone it with us! So now we can all play games until way too late and enjoy our friends! Pizza, PlayStation, movies, makeovers, and cards...happy day!

3. Both of our children are happy and healthy and enjoying school--Praise the Lord! Kaela read me an entire book tonight--fluently, with expression, and like she's been reading for years. I never would have thought I would cry over something like that...but you just never know... :)

4. I'm about to start a new book this weekend, too! The anticipation is killing me, but I can't pick it up before then, or I won't sleep until I finish it.

5. Sarah Palin's debating in a few minutes!

6. Fall break is just around the corner

7. Daylight savings time still seems a bit far off. (I hate daylight savings time--it spoils fall.)

Ah, yes. Life is busy, but good. We have so many reasons to give Him praise!

A neighborhood slumber party is a very good idea. Something differrent. It always seems daunting to me trying to figure out who all to invite... School classmates, Church Sunday School Class, neighbors, family... Maybe this year I can ask her if she wants to invite, school, church or neighbors?? We'll see.

I know Kayla has picked up reading very easily and naturally but I am curious what types of teaching methods you have used to help her learn letter sounds and whatnot. I need to give Maddie a little extra help at home I think.

Hey, Angie...
Actually, our district has moved to more "literacy based" reading instruction (JCPS probably has, too), and we worried that she wouldn't get the phonics/base skills she'll need for decoding. We checked out Hooked on Phonics from the library, and did that this summer. It was fun and came with a computer game where you have to pass the first level in order to move on...
We are also using Words Their Way--(and so is her teacher when kids aren't quite getting it) a program that teaches patterns (consonant vowel vowel consonant, for example)and rules, so that she can pull out parts of words and decode that chunk, then make sense of the rest. I really like this program, and am using it to teach spelling rules in my resource room this year. It looks daunting to me, an adult, but the kids get it and are flying through it.
Hope that helps!
Phonics aren't the "in" thing right now, but so necessary, so I feel your pain! :)
OH, there's also a book called "Teach your child to read in 100 easy lessons) or something like that, and it's research based, derived from the SRI reading program, and lots of parents are saying that one worked for them! :)
Let me know if you need materials!
