(Wow, I'm already beginning to hate NaBloPoMo. It's only the 6th of the month, and my stress reliever (writing) is beginning to stress me. I'm not quitting yet...but I don't think I'm gonna make it 30 days.)
OK, onto the point of the post--I wasn't kidding when I said I would stick to small things this month. Especially since there are so many big things going on in the world. But I do have to reference the election Tuesday to set my purpose.
I don't think I could coherently blog about the election yet if I were allowing myself the freedom to do it. My mind is still firing like a pinball machine from one reaction to the next, conjuring up "what ifs" and just basically spinning its wheels. Overall, though, the main reaction I have is deep uncertainty. On the one hand, I'm thrilled to say we have elected a black president. Even with all of our problems, I don't think we could truly be the greatest nation on Earth until we were able to elect people based on merit, not race. On the other hand, I sure do wish I could believe in his policies. Any of them. The "change we can believe in" makes my heart palpitate. To borrow a line from Ben, "What does dat even mean???" I'm afraid to find out.
Anyway, though my heart's troubled, I'm looking for the steady constant throughout these tumultuous times. And so, I began to evaluate all that I know, that I know, that I know to be true, and I compiled them into a little list for your enjoyment.
Without further ado, here are some things we can still count on:
1. If you wash your car, it will rain.
2. If you go to the grocery without makeup on, you'll run into someone you know
3. You will never catch on until after the test.
4. Friendly fire--isn't.
5. If you're running late, your flight is not.
6. Your best idea is already copyrighted.
7. When you forget your stroller--they want to ride.
8. If it's stupid but it works--it isn't stupid.
9. All bleeding stops--eventually.
10. We could do worse--we always have.
And some sure bets in my own life:
1. When I wear my favorite pink shirt, I get a coffee stain.
2. When we clean out the car, somebody vomits
3. Anytime I get in the bathtub when I'm home alone, the doorbell rings.
So there. See? Some things never change, no matter who's elected to office, or what policies are up for revision. There are some things that remain unchanging and steadfast.
Here are just a couple more, though, in case you aren't convinced by the previous meager offerings:
Psalm 145:13 (NIV)
Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and your dominion endures through all generations. The LORD is faithful to all his promises and loving toward all he has made
Deuteronomy 7:9 "Know therefore that the LORD your God, He is God, the faithful God, who keeps His covenant and His lovingkindness to a thousandth generation with those who love Him and keep His commandments;
Romans 8:28 And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.

Yes! As Paul and I always say to each other, God is still the God of us. There is great comfort in knowing that He sees the whole picture and is working all things (even the crummy things) together for our ultimate good.
As for the election, my feelings mirror yours. While I celebrate the historic nature of this win for Obama, I wish I could truly be as excited about it as everyone else. To me, the whole debacle feels like a rushed wedding, heavy on romantic ideals and light on reality. I'm afraid the honeymoon will end all too soon. I'd love to be wrong about that.
It's good to know that our home is elsewhere, yes?
