Election Eve

We haven't spoken to Kaela about politics at all this time because, well, she's 6. She's watched parts of the debates with us, and knows why we vote, but we haven't really talked to her about issues, or differences, or even worldviews. We figured there was plenty of time. When she's not six, you know.

Today when I picked her up she gave me a hug then said, "Mommy, I want you to vote for John McCain."

Me: What? Why? What do you know about it?

Kaela: (with a sigh) Mom. I know it's election day tomorrow. I know you go in a booth to vote just like I voted to be drug-free. I want to go with you. I want to vote too.

Me: Kaela, you always go with me. We go to the little church, remember? Behind the blue curtain. They give you a sticker. Now why do you want me to vote for McCain?

Kaela: Because the 5th graders chose him in their mock election. I like what he believes in better. He talks better. Do I get to vote?

Me: What else?

Kaela: I already told you all about it, Mom. He makes more sense. Now, are you going to vote for him?

I can hardly believe she got all this stuff from our 5th grade government unit (part of which has been put on the morning newscast.)
Interesting stuff. She has a friend over tonight for dinner, and they're talking politics right now--specifically on the wrongness of abortion. Her friend is 5. I wish I had a tape-recorder. They're discussing Sarah Palin now...
Wow. Let's hear it for democracy--though I must admit to being kinda freaked out about the permeability of this information age.

Wow! She's really been listening! It's neat that she cam to that decision all on her own.

My boys woke up this morning talking politics too- but their conversation included this statement, "I like John McCain. It's funner to say." Election day is like a holiday! If the never- ceasing annoying phone calls stop, I'll definitely be celebrating!
