School's Out

Sigh.

It's over.

The most intense teaching year ever is in the books. 4 autistic children. 3 with IQs below 60. 2 gifted/behavior children. And one with the kind of ADHD that makes the Energizer Bunny look like a sloth. Plus the other seven. The thief. The storyteller. The class clown. The one with the grin a mile wide. My favorite. And my other favorite. The life-threatening food allergies. And the custody situation. The other duties in addition to teaching. And all the days I looked for other jobs--say, in the toothpick counting industry.

They make a mark, these kids do. The permanent kind that draws peals of laughter at random times, or that brings tears to my eyes.

I still love my job. Even when I fantasize about retirement. I can't imagine doing anything else.

I'm going to miss them terribly.

Congrats on the growth you and your students have experienced this year. They are so blessed to have had you for a teacher!

Enjoy your summer!
